Ice cream per se does not cause tooth decay. Tooth decay happens when foods (any kind of foods, not just sweet ones!) break down in the mouth to produce acids that attack our teeth’s protective covering. Simply put, poor dental hygiene is the culprit. To prevent tooth decay, try using fluoride-fortified dental care products, or brush teeth more often to prevent any buildup of food or sugars.
Ice-cream feels cold in your mouth because it contains less heat than the internal surfaces of your mouth do. As heat flows from a material with more heat to one with less heat, therefore, heat flows from the surfaces of your mouth to the ice-cream. The cold sensation you feel is actually that of your mouth’s surfaces losing heat.
Without a doubt, ice-cream has long been one of the most popular ‘comfort foods’ around. Could it be that combination of creamy, gooey sweetness and cold, tingling sensation that makes it irresistible to so many? Not to mention all the good stuff that go into making it, like milk and fresh fruits, which can only be good for your body. Lounging on a couch spooning lusciously rich ice-cream into your mouth, now that is the perfect way to enjoy your daily dose of TV, or simply as a treat!
Ice cream contains a big proportion of milk, which contains water that freezes when it gets very cold. As the ice-cream is scooped out from the freezer into a wafer cone for your enjoyment, the temperature around the ice-cream rises tremendously and causes the water crystals in it to melt.
There are many different types of ice-cream but they all contain the same ingredients – water, milk, butterfat and additives such as flavouring and sugar – in different proportions. As each ingredient melts at different temperatures, the different types of ice-creams melt at different rates too.
We have through the years made improvements to the recipe of our ice-cream as part of good customer service and in response to customer feedback on fast-melting ice-cream. This was done to enhance the enjoyment of our ice cream, primarily to allow consumers to enjoy their ice-cream leisurely. The ice cream slowly melts into a creamy liquid. Slow melting ice cream is not new to Singapore. There are high-end premium ranges of ice creams that are marketed as slower-melting ice creams.
The blend of stabilizers and emulsifiers used in our ice cream is natural and originates from plants and seaweed. All ingredients used in F&N Magnolia ice-cream products meet and exceed requirements set by the Sale of Food Act.

Just because ice-cream is stored at cold temperatures does not mean that there can be no bacteria growth. Bacteria grow well on foods that are high in protein and moisture, such as ice-cream. Take care not to draw out the treat for too long, as the warmer your ice-cream gets, the more bacteria thrive in it. Also, make it a habit to scoop your desired portion into a bowl and put the tub back into the freezer, instead of eating straight from the tub till you are satisfied.

Milk and yoghurt drinks are rich sources of calcium. An increased calcium intake is essential during pregnancy because calcium is transferred from the woman’s bones to strengthen the baby’s bones and teeth. A pregnant woman will need 1,000 to 1,200 mg of calcium daily for her baby’s bones and teeth to develop well, and this means increasing her calcium intake by at least 25%. Insufficient calcium intake during pregnancy can lead to bone loss, tooth damage, or even osteoporosis in mothers later on. Calcium has also been said to prevent pregnancy hypertension.
Pasteurized milk is milk that has undergone controlled heating for a short time for the purpose of killing harmful micro-organisms such as bacteria, mould and yeast. The milk is then cooled for storage and transportation. This process, known as pasteurization, helps keep the taste and freshness of the milk. Pasteurized milk is still perishable and must be stored cold by both suppliers and consumers.
There is a natural sugar, known as lactose, that is found in milk and other dairy products. To digest lactose, the intestines produce an enzyme known as lactase. In people who are lactose-intolerant, their bodies produce insufficient lactase and it is difficult to digest lactose. This gives rise to unpleasant symptoms such as bloating, stomach cramps, flatulence and diarrhea. It is also possible that some people become lactose intolerant as they age, because their bodies produce less and less lactase.
There are actually no hard and fast rules when it comes to milk consumption. Primarily, milk is usually the richest source of dietary calcium. An average adult will need 800mg of calcium, which is equivalent to just three 200ml glasses of F&N Magnolia Fresh Milk. Aside from its calcium content, milk is also almost a complete food, containing vitamins A, B and D, potassium, phosphorus and protein, among other nutrients. Besides, milk is a filling beverage that goes well with common breakfast foods such as cereals and bread, thus preventing unhealthy snacking and food cravings later on in the day. Having said that, it is just as beneficial to spread out one’s milk intake over the day; it really is up to the individual’s preference!
Supplements can of course help you reach your daily calcium requirements, but the nutrients and minerals from foods are wholly natural and easily absorbed by the human body. Dairy products such as milk and yoghurt drinks are among the richest sources of calcium. In addition, simply relying on calcium supplements will mean missing out on the gastronomic pleasures of dairy products like cheeses and rich, creamy milk.
It is a common local belief that people are unable to sleep well if they are hungry, hence the common practice of having supper before bed. In place of greasy roti prata or fried kway teow however, try downing a glass of milk and some plain, lightly salted crackers before sleeping as a healthier, less cholesterol-laden alternative. Besides being better for the heart, having some warm milk before bed may improve sleep quality as well. According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a protein naturally found in milk – known as alpha-lactalbumin – may help one sleep better and enhance one’s sense of rested-ness the next day, without the side effects of sleep-inducing drugs.
People who are lactose intolerant can replace milk with plain, low-fat yoghurt drinks, cheese, yoghurt, and calcium-fortified soy milk. These are good sources of vitamin B, high quality protein and calcium.
Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for infants 0-6 mths. From 6 months onwards, parents can provide their children with formula milk for age category. F&N Magnolia fresh milk can be given to children from one year of age. Low-fat or skim milk should not be given to children below 2 years old.
Definitely not! Dairy products are important for people of all ages, regardless of gender. They are typically rich in calcium and vitamin D, which are essential nutrients for building strong bones, teeth and preventing osteoporosis. This is crucial for people of all ages!
There are no preservatives in F&N Magnolia’s milk. The milk is kept fresh and tasty through the process of pasteurization. When properly chilled and stored, the milk normally has a shelf life of two to four weeks.
